Club V.R.

(1996)

by Tuna

Virtual reality is a natural for softcore films since anything can happen at any time, including non-stop nudity and simulated sex, because VR is only limited by the imagination. So far that potential is largely unexplored. For some reason, most of the couples erotica films based on this premise seem to be whodunnits, where someone dies during a VR session, and a detective must enter VR to catch the killer.

This time, the victim is practically "Mr. VR," and the location is an exclusive Beverly Hills VR club. Detective Kate Rodger is assigned the case. She lives with her boyfriend and former partner who was shot and disabled in the line of duty, and her belief that it was her fault has made her unable to respond sexually to him. When she is forced to enter the VR world to look for clues in the victims past sessions, she is an easy target for seduction. Meanwhile her significant other begins to suspect that he should be jealous of VR. The film remains fairly tightly focused on Kate Rodger, her investigation and her growing addiction to virtual reality.

This film is strong on plot, many of the performances were adequate, and the solution surprised me, although it probably shouldn't have. There is also sufficient quantity nudity to meet minimum softcore standards, so it all adds up to a capable if unspectacular representative of the 90s softcore genre.
